Biomass boiler replacement grants and the RHI

Biomass boilers have become more popular in recent years as a way to reduce bills whilst using an environmentally friendly energy source. Biomass boilers are often wood-fuelled systems which burn pellets, chips or logs to generate heat for use in the home.

You can invest in a stove to heat a single room, or even get a back boiler as well for water heating too. In fact, with a wood-fuelled boiler you can save up to £600 a year on your heating bills. And there are boiler grants to help you with the installation costs too.

There are three main reasons to invest in biomass heating:

  • Affordable heat: Although the price of wood can vary, it’s still much cheaper than using National Grid gas and electricity, which continues to increase in cost.
  • Financial support: With biomass systems there are range of financial incentives, such as the biomass boiler RHI and RHPP boiler replacement grants. Boiler replacement grants help homeowners to cover the high install costs.
  • Reducing carbon emissions:The burning of fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, whilst burning wood will only release carbon collected throughout it’s lifetime, making it carbon neutral. As such it’s the much more environmentally friendly option.

The Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a major Government scheme which is set to come into play from spring 2014. It works in a similar way to the much talked about feed-in tariff for solar panels, and pays out for each unit of renewable heat generated. And it doesn’t matter if you use the energy onsite or not, you’ll still be paid.

With the biomass boiler RHI scheme you can earn hundreds of pounds every single year, and this will be paid out quarterly for seven years. As such, you stand to make a fantastic return on investment with both the savings and earnings combined.

The biomass boiler RHI rates vary for each renewable product, and for biomass boiler systems there is a rate of 12.2p/kWh.But what about boiler replacement grants?

The Renewable Heat Premium Payment

The Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) is a Government-funded grant to help with the cost of renewable installations. It helps to cover the initial investment prices and depending on the technology you choose you’ll receive a different grant amount.

For biomass there are boiler grants available worth £600.

You need to qualify for certain eligibility criteria and you must be a homeowner to receive boiler grants. You should also ensure your home is as efficient as possible, with loft lagging and wall cavity insulation where appropriate.
